About the Workshop
Learn how to use a cut-pile power rug tufting machine to create your own finished handmade rug!
This hands-on intensive instructional class will cover the basics:
• tools + materials
• threading + operating tufting machines
• gluing + backing
• finishing options
• carving with electric shears
Participants will be set up at their own workspace including a tufting machine, frame, backing fabric, tools + supplies. Using a projector, participants will easily transfer their chosen design onto the tufting frame. Emily will guide the process start-to-finish, answering any questions along the way!
Participants will leave this 2-day workshop with a finished 24”x24” tufted rug ready to hang or use on the floor, a handy quick-start guide, links to resources, and the knowledge to continue making rugs on their own!
AGE LIMIT 18+
Itinerary - Two Day Intensive
DAY ✿ 1
Learn about the machine, materials, and workspace. Tuft your entire rug, apply glue, light clean-up. This is the only day we'll be using the tufting machines.
DAY ✿ 2
Attach the backing, trim with electric shears + scissors, and finish your rug! Clean up.
BREAKS: There is no official break time, but participants are welcome to break anytime they wish! Bring your water bottle, and any snacks or drinks to nibble on. We're located near many eateries in case you need to pick up something on the way!
Yarn Information
We’ll provide all the tools, including a selection of acrylic yarn for you to use! Yarn colors and quantities are limited, so if your design requires specific colors/shades, please bring your own!
Yarn-Buying Tips:
• acrylic yarn / worsted or medium weight
• NO SHINY, SUPER SOFT or FUZZY YARN (it will jam the machine)
• recommended brands: big twist, caron, loops & threads
• yarn stores: michaels, SCRAP, fiber rhythm craft & design

FIRST TIME TUFTING? Keep the design super simple and geometric! A limited color palette + no linework is ideal. Rectangular shaped rugs are best for beginners!
Safety + Accessibility
• This is an in-person workshop!
• Space is limited to 8 participants at a time. Classes are small, just how we like it!
• Tie back long hair
• Comfortable close-toed shoes
• Participants will be standing or sitting using the machine for extended periods of time. Tufting machines weigh 4 lbs and will require some arm + hand strength!
• Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated! We'll be moving around.
• Restroom on premises
• Three steps at the front entrance
• Free street parking in the neighborhood
